The 25 Best Surf Quotes in History, Sprinkled with a Bit of Humor

Feb 15, 2018 | Sin categoría

The world of surfing has given us some great quotes to remember. In this article from our surf school Biosurfcamp, we share several of the best surf quotes with a touch of humor, hoping you enjoy them. In this list, we don’t just offer the 10 best surf quotes — we go further and present a collection of the 25 best surf quotes. Here begins the top surf sayings.

  • Duke Kahanamoku said, “Out of the water, I am nothing.”

The “Big Kahuna,” considered the father of modern surfing, felt right at home in the water — a true Hawaiian surfer.

  • Gerry Lopez said, “Surfing is dancing with the waves.”

A junior surf champion and expert in clapping — one of those facts is incorrect. This surf quote was even used on the show FAMA a Bailar.

  • Duke Kahanamoku said, “Don’t worry, there are millions of waves out there. Take your time and your wave will come.”

Now we understand the previous quote: if out of the water he was nothing, in the water he’s a fruit — WAIT, yes, sorry.

  • Laird Hamilton said, “Surfing is one of the few sports where you have to look forward to see what’s behind you.”

Surfing with rearview mirrors. Patenting the idea in 3, 2, 1…

  • Paul Strauch said, “Surfing is a lot like making love; it always makes you feel good, no matter how many times you’ve done it.”

A true playboy and longboard trick master — anything else to add?

  • Nat Young said, “When in doubt, paddle.”

A great extension of John Lennon’s phrase, “When in doubt, screw it.”

  • Sharif Ahnor said, “You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.”

I saw Gandalf facing the Balrog — everything is possible if you set your mind to it. “You shall not pass!”

  • Mike Doyle said, “Live to surf, surf to live.”

Mike, be honest — did this surf quote help you at home?

  • Kelly Slater said, “It’s all about where your mind is.”

Mike, you’ve been outdone on the right. And that’s that. A surf quote and a breakfast mug motto. Mr. Wonderful mode: ON.

  • Jeff Hakman said, “Surfing is almost a way of flying.”

Remember our surf movie ranking, the movie Locos por el Surf (penguins surfing), and the Mixta commercial (by chance, some of us might have to fly).

  • Duke Kahanamoku said, “The best surfer is the one having the most fun.”

The most truthful phrase in the world. Surfing is a passion, a sport where you become one with the sea, and having the most fun is the key to enjoying it. Of course, in competitions, the one with the highest points usually wins.

  • Jack O’Neill said, “I’m just a surfer who wanted to create something that would allow me to surf longer.”

The main developer of the wetsuit. Feel like a sir.

  • Mark Foo said, “It’s not tragic to die doing something you love.”

Mark Foo, you just gave me a great idea. Now I have a title for my Sunday afternoon movie. Get the popcorn ready.

  • Skip Frye said, “Surfing to me is like playing music. You play different melodies with different instruments.”

We go from dancing to playing an instrument—each wave is unique, and you have to discover the melody it inspires.

  • Kelly Slater said, “It’s like the mafia. Once you’re in, you can’t get out.”

Another great surf quote from Kelly Slater. Al Capone said it once too, because both lose their charm if there’s a “Prohibition.” Low blow.

  • Bob McTavish said, “You can take a surfer out of the waves, but you can’t take the waves out of the surfer.”

Bob, solve another doubt for me—what came first, the chicken or the egg?

  • Bruce Jenkins said, “Surfing is for life.”

Then he got married.

  • Bethany Hamilton said, “My passion for surfing was greater than my fear of sharks.”

The star of Soul Surfer, Bethany Hamilton said this… after watching the movie based on true events, you’ll understand why. No spoilers. Well, maybe a little.

  • Buzzy Trent said, “Waves aren’t measured in feet and inches, they’re measured in increments of fear.”

Outdoing Soul Surfer, the “superproduction” Zombie Shark Trent, Zombie Shark. Nonetheless, we leave you several methods to measure wave height.

  • Shaun Tomson said, “Being spit out of one of those huge roaring Hawaiian barrels is the most incredible feeling I’ve experienced in my life. It’s joy, fear, and achievement, all in one experience.”

Shaun, I’ll say it in two words: “Dragon Khan.” Think about it.

  • Buzzy Trent said, “A great wave is like a beautiful woman, exciting to see and exciting to ride.”

Buzzy Trent is quite the flirt; this phrase is a bit of a playboy line… oh, Buzzy!

  • Jack O’Neill said, “The three most important things in life: surf, surf, surf.”

Jack, if only you had discovered: surf, nap, surf… oh, Jack! P.S.: Read the phrase in the voice of Carlos Sobera.

  • Jamie O’Brien said, “There’s no right way to surf a wave.”

Maybe Jamie didn’t consider the possibility of falling, though it’s true that every wave is its own world.

  • Breno Rigaud said, “The sea creates illusions, the waves ask questions, and surfing gives answers.”

My math teacher created questions, my calculator gave no answers, and my tears made a sea of illusions… broken ones.

  • Andy Irons said, “If you try to change my surfing, it’s the worst thing you can do. Everyone surfs their own way.”

So I don’t surf badly, I surf differently. A great surf quote for everyone taking an introductory surf course.

Now that you have our ranking of quotes… Which one did you like the most? Which quote do you think is missing? And most importantly, do you have your own surf saying that deserves to be in our top list?

pablo ruiz surfista biosurfcamp suances cantabria
