Our history of surfing and sustainability in Suances

Bio Surf Camp was born from the desire to give back to the sea what it has given us, to take care of the Suances coast and to share our passion for the waves.

From the impact of the Prestige to a sustainable surf camp

“I felt that if I could get more people to love surfing, the sea, and the Suances meadows, the pollution and environmental disasters could end.”

I’m Pablo, founder of Bio Surf Camp. I grew up surfing the waves of Playa de los Locos in Suances, but I spent years away from the ocean, living in different European countries.

At the end of 2003, in Lapland, surrounded by snow and the northern lights, in the middle of a forest and with temperatures over 30°C below zero, I knew it was time to return home. My decision coincided with the arrival of the Prestige oil in Cantabria, a catastrophe that deeply affected me and reminded me of the most important thing: protecting the ocean.

With the idea of inspiring others to love and respect the ocean, Bio Surf Camp was born, a space where surfing and sustainability go hand in hand toward a cleaner world.

Our story begins more than 30 years ago

1992

We surfed our first waves at Playa de los Locos, now a Natural Surf Reserve due to its exceptional conditions. That same year, we acquired the property in Suances that would eventually become the home of Bio Surf Camp.

2005

Shocked by the damage to our coast following the Prestige disaster, we organized our first surf camp. We combined the stay with lectures and surf lessons, sowing the seed for what would become our commitment to the ocean and environmental education.

2010

Bio Surf Camp was born with the values that define us: respect for the ocean, passion for surfing, and good vibes. Since then, we've continued to grow as a team and strengthen our commitment to sustainability.

2024

National Geographic Travel recognizes our evolution and our commitment to the environment, highlighting us among the best surf camps in Spain and positioning us as the best surf camp in Cantabria.

Today

What was once a small family garden is now a surf camp renowned for its respect for the environment and its passion for teaching the sport that has brought us so much joy.

What does the name “BioSurfCamp” mean?

M
L

The word "Bio" reflects our commitment to respect for nature, the use of eco-friendly materials, and a responsible approach to the environment.

"Surf" is the central theme of the experience, a connection with the sea that goes beyond the sport.

And "Camp" refers to our space, where travelers from all over the world share experiences and form a community around their passion for the waves.

Bio Surf Camp is much more than our name: it is our essence.

Who founded BioSurfCamp and why?

M
L

BioSurfCamp was founded by Pablo Ruiz with the dream of creating a space where surfing, nature, and sustainability would come together.

Inspired by his passion for the ocean and the desire to prevent an environmental catastrophe like the Prestige oil spill from once again devastating the Cantabrian coast, he decided to create a unique camp.

Surfing here means much more than gliding over the waves; it means connecting with and respecting nature.

Why does Biosurfcamp focus on a sustainable approach?

M
L

Since its founding, Biosurfcamp has had sustainability as its fundamental pillar. We believe that surfing is much more than a sport, becoming a way to connect with nature, and that connection involves caring for the environment that gives us the waves.

Therefore, at Biosurfcamp:

  • We use recycled and eco-friendly materials in our facilities.
  • We promote respect for the sea in every surf session.
  • We are committed to sustainable, low-impact (or positive-impact) tourism on the coast.
  • We encourage responsible habits, such as efficient water use and reducing plastics.

For us, sustainability is not a fad, but a true commitment to the planet.

What sets Biosurfcamp apart from other surf camps in Spain?

M
L

What makes us a unique surf camp in Spain is our combination of surfing, sustainability, and a close-knit community that repeats the experience year after year.

We've achieved this with:

  • Facilities designed to minimize environmental impact.
  • Small group classes ensure that the teaching is tailored to each student.
  • A complete glamping experience with eco-domes, spaces integrated into nature, and endless activities.

What values inspire surfing instruction at Biosurfcamp?

M
L

At Biosurfcamp, surfing is a way of life based on respect for nature, conscious learning, and a passion for the waves.

Our teaching focuses on instilling a deep love for the sea, helping students develop confidence and security in the water, without pressure or comparisons.

We believe in the importance of sharing quality time with other surfing friends, and in the camaraderie that fosters an environment where everyone can grow and enjoy together.
